علماء من أماكن متفرقة

كان البرفيسور إدوارد سعيد، أستاذ الإنكليزي والأدب المقارن في جامعة كولومبيا في ولاية نيويورك، واحدا من ما يقارب المئات من الأساتذة والطلاب والخريجين الذين أخذت صورهم لتصلق مع آرائهم حول موضوع "أمريكا كجامعة حاضنة" للتأثير المشترك لأمريكا والجامعات العربية وكذا تأثير العلماء العرب والأمريكيين العرب. وقد قامت بهذا الجهد كتابة وتصويرا كاترينا توماس التي اضطرت إلى السفر من بيروت إلى نيويورك.

عندما قامت كاتيرنا بهذا التعريف، كان إدوارد سعيد قد نشر للتو كتابه الشهير "الاستشراق" والذي كان مدار معظم المناقشات التي تلت ذلك حول علاقات العرب والغربيين، حيت كتبت كاترينا "الاستشراق هو مصطلح البرفيسور سعيد لمفهوم الغرب للشرق المسلم الذين يتصورنه غامضا وشاعريا وغير متطور ثم بالنتيجة الحتمية أقل منزلة – وهي رؤيا تم تشكيلها عبر السيطرة للثقافة الغربية واحتضها قرنان من العلمنة الغربية وغذتها الرؤى الرومانسية للشرق.  وبعيدا عن المعرفة الحقيقة للعالم العربي، يؤكد إداورد سعيد أن الغربيين يتصورن الشرق الأوسط خلال إطار فرضه باستبداد المستشرقون السابقون والمعاصرون.  أملا بأن يساعد العلماء الجدد في كل من الجامعات العربية والأمريكية في تغيير هذا التشويش"

“A Scattering of Scholars”

Edward W. Said, Parr Professor of English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University in New York, was one of nearly a hundred professors, students and alumni photographed for an issue titled “America as Alma Mater,” on the reciprocal influence of US and Arab universities and of Arab, American and Arab-American scholars. Most of the issue was written and photographed by Thomas, who had moved back to New York from Beirut.

When she made this portrait, Said had just published his landmark book, Orientalism, which has framed much of the discussion of relations between Arabs and Westerners ever since. Of it, Thomas wrote: “‘Orientalism’ is Professor Said’s term for the Western conception of the Muslim East as mysterious, sensual, unchanging and ultimately inferior—a view which has been conditioned by Western cultural hegemony, fostered by two centuries of Western scholarship, and popularized by romanticized visions of the East…. Far from experiencing the reality of the Arab world, he asserts, Westerners view the Middle East through a framework of ideas promulgated and perpetuated by past and present Orientalists…. The new scholars, in both American and Arab universities, will…help change the[se] distortions.”
